So intense - Michael Cooper's Sauvignon Blanc feature in the Listener

New Zealand Listener

In this week's New Zealand Listener, Michael Cooper takes a look at New Zealand's outstanding Sauvignon Blanc from the 2020 vintage.

We are proud to see Blackenbrook prominently featured in the line-up with a 4 ½ Star review:

"Estate-grown in Tasman, this hand-picked wine is fragrant with penetrating, ripely herbaceous flavours showing excellent delicacy, a touch of barrel-ferment complexity and a crisp, dry, lasting finish."

Summer is just around the corner - we have the wine for you!

Blackenbrook wins Trophy for 2020 Pinot Blanc

Two trophies for the winery’s new varietal in as many years

MEDIA RELEASE
22 October 2020

Blackenbrook Pinot Blanc 2020 awarded Trophy from New Zealand International Wine Show

Blackenbrook Vineyard’s 2020 Pinot Blanc received the Trophy in the ‘Other White Wine Varieties’ class from the New Zealand International Wine Show at its awards announcement last night. This is the winery’s second vintage of Pinot Blanc and second trophy in prestigious competitions honouring alternative white wines.

The New Zealand International Wine Show (NZIWS) is the largest wine competition in the country. This year Bob Campbell MW chaired a panel of senior judges who awarded a record number of gold medals. The judges included leading winemakers, several Masters of Wine, and many key industry personnel, most of whom have been involved in major wine competitions for more than a decade. Judges expressed delight to see a New Zealand made Pinot Blanc topping the ‘Other White Wine Varieties’ class.

Owner and winemaker Daniel Schwarzenbach says that 2020 was a near-perfect season for grape-growing generally, and the Pinot Blanc vines benefitted from another year in the ground to deepen their roots.

“The 2020 Pinot Blanc is a superbly balanced wine from what has been a stellar year for winemaking all-around. The Pinot Blanc fruit came pristine off the vine, a real joy to work with. You can taste the minerality in the wine from roots that have found their way deeper into the soil, continually searching for moisture and nutrients. Wine drinkers will notice that minerality as well as a zing from the combination of floral and spicy notes. It’s slightly more acidic, which means it’s fresher to drink. And it will be equally good for cellaring.”

Last year’s inaugural Pinot Blanc vintage won the Trophy in the New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition in the ‘Other Aromatic’ category. Mr Schwarzenbach was confident that this new product, matured in stainless steel to allow the fruit’s natural flavours to shine, would be pleasing to kiwi wine lovers. In fact, it was such a good vintage, he held some back in old barrels and added it to the 2020 vintage.

Owner and winemaker Daniel Schwarzenbach at Blackenbrook Vineyard, Nelson, New Zealand

“Adding in a bit of the 2019 helped bring some texture to the 2020 wine, which was honestly looking incredible anyway thanks to the quality of the fruit and the incredible growing season.” Adding wine from previous vintages brings depth to a fruit crop that is taken from the same site each year. It is one of the tools Mr Schwarzenbach uses to create his style of wine. Other wineries with more land and vines can blend with grapes from different soils to achieve their own unique vintage.

Mr Schwarzenbach is grateful to the team who worked in the vineyard this year, especially under the uniquely stressful conditions.

“Our family, the vineyard team, and the folks who hand-picked our grapes under extreme pressure ahead of the pandemic lockdown are all due immense thanks. We are honoured to win the Trophy and humbled by the accolades we are getting for this varietal.

“I’m not surprised, however, that the Pinot Blanc is attracting awards and interest, though. We felt confident this particular grape, by growing it in our terroir and climate with our natural approach, would produce incredible wines for our customers to drink now and later.”

Purchase the 2020 Pinot Blanc online at www.blackenbrook.co.nz and at select retailers found on our website. Read more information about the varietal and its previous awards in our News section.

Trophy-winning Blackenbrook Nelson Pinot Blanc 2020

About Blackenbrook Vineyard, Nelson, New Zealand

On a gentle north-facing slope near Tasman Village, you’ll find Blackenbrook Vineyard, a small volume, high quality winery on a 20ha block owned by Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach. Blackenbrook Vineyard produces seven grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and the Italian red variety Montepulciano. Blackenbrook Vineyard is accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

It is a winery designed by a working winemaker. In this region, vines grow into Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate sweeps over the hillsides. The vineyard was first planted in the spring of 2001 and the first vintage was launched in 2004. Healthy soil, strong vines and sustainability are the focus of the vineyard management. Daniel, also the winemaker, strives for minimal interference with natural processes, which has resulted in pure and genuine wines. Most of Blackenbrook’s white varieties – including the 2019 Pinot Blanc – are completely unfined and vegan.

Spring's here!

Spring at award-winning Blackenbrook Vineyard, Nelson, New Zealand
Our vines burst into growth a good two week's early this year - let's keep the fingers crossed for Jack Frost to stay away!

Many of the new shoots appear as twins, like the Gewurztraminer in this photo. Our team is systematically removing the weaker shoot, halving the amount of canes each vine will grow. This also halves the potential crop and reduces leaf congestion - the first step towards a healthy and concentrated 2021 vintage!

Blackenbrook's burst of clean, rich flavours from 'exceptional' 2020 vintage

The Nelson Mail, 17 Sept 2020, by Neil Hodgson

Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach, The Nelson Mail 16 Sept 2020

A few weeks ago Ursula Schwarzenbach asked me if I would like to visit Blackenbrook Wines to taste their 2020 vintage. Of course I said yes (who wouldn’t!).

Over the years I have been mightily impressed by Ursula and husband Daniel and the wines they craft. As Daniel said to me last week “to be honest 80 per cent of the winemaking happens in the vineyard, I just have to finish the process in the winery.”

This understates just how much effort the couple and their young family put into creating their delightful wines. Located on the sloping hills at Tasman, up the road behind the Tasman Store, the vineyards are managed with intense detail to ensure the fruit is in the best condition possible to turn into wine.

The 2020 vintage was notable for the Covid-19 lockdown during which the wine industry was granted essential services status to be able to harvest their once-a-year export crop.

At Blackenbrook Vineyards however the final pick happened on the day before lockdown started, “we were due to finish on the Friday so by working longer hours for a few days we were able to get all the fruit picked and into the winery before lockdown”.

Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach, The Nelson Mail 16 Sept 2020

Ursula told me their assistant winemaker headed back to Germany early to beat lockdown restrictions but as school was also locked down their son Thomas was able to step in and help. “He has always been around the winery and helped in every aspect from the vineyards to the bottling line so he knows his way around the winery, it was just full time as assistant to Daniel for a week or so.”

The couple are also delighted with the quality of the vintage this year. “It was exceptional” says Daniel and I must say that based on the wines I tried last week I agree.

For me the wines at Blackenbrook have a certain purity of flavour to them. It’s a character I find difficult to describe but the wines tend to have a perfect expression of the varietal flavours and I’m certain this comes from the meticulous vineyard management that means less intervention in the winemaking process in the winery.

“Some of the wines pretty much make themselves,” says Daniel. Beautiful clean fruit equals beautiful clean flavours. “For wines like sauvignon blanc and pinot blanc we didn’t do anything in the winery, we just need a good ferment to turn great, clean fruit into nice wine, we try and use very gentle processes so we don’t lose the flavours.”

I tasted seven new release wines in the hour and a half I spent at Blackenbrook and tasting notes for all of these are on my website  but one worth a special mention here is the 2020 Pinot Blanc. This is the second vintage for this variety at Blackenbrook and what a stunning wine it is!

The aromas are intense, bursting with rich cooked pear and stonefruit characters that are dusted with delightful floral notes in the background. The richness of the aromas is reflected in the weighty, delicious flavours, balanced with a touch of freshness and deliver liquorice-like characters in the very long finish. This is a five-star wine and one that will certainly find itself attached to my credit card and a place in our cellar.

First wines released from exceptional 2020 vintage!

Award-winning Blackenbrook Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2020 released!

The wait is over and we can finally release the first two wines from the exceptional 2020 vintage, the Sauvignon Blanc and Rose!

The growing season was an absolute delight, putting smiles on everyone’s face!  The vines loved the gentle spring rain and quickly produced a healthy, vibrantly green canopy.  In December, our Nelson sun made for perfect flowering and good pollination.

Summer brought many weeks of blue skies, interspersed with brief rain falls, just enough to keep the soil moisture up and the vines thriving.

We couldn’t believe our luck when we saw the weather pattern continue right into harvest in mid-March! The fruit was in perfect condition with high sugar levels and tremendous flavour intensity, probably the best we’ve ever seen it!

As Covid-19 started to cast long shadows over the country, we managed to complete harvest 2020 just hours before the start of lockdown.

Our new releases are off to a flying start and are already attracting exceptional feedback from New Zealand's most knowledgeable wine writers.  We hope you'll love them as much as we do!

Full Marks from Cameron Douglas MS for Blackenbrook Pinot Gris '19

Master Sommelier Cameron DouglasIn the latest Mindfood Magazine, Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas writes about delicious winter wines from lesser known wineries and wine regions.

We are proud to fly the flag for Nelson and have our Pinot Gris 2019 featured in this stellar line-up!

"Winemaking Team Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach have been part of the wine landscape in Nelson since 1999.  Their dedication to hand-crafted fine wine is amazing.

Their Pinot Gris over-delivers on power and intensity with flavours of white-fleshed tropical fruit, pear and white nectarine with whispers of ginger spice and loads of texture."

Winter at Blackenbrook's

Winter at Blackenbrook Family Vineyard in Nelson Tasman, New Zealand

Pruning is in full swing with most of our white varieties now looking neat and tidy, ready for the new season. We are lucky to have a great team steadily chipping away at this immense task!

In the winery we are gearing up for our biggest bottling yet. We are currently filtering our wines, the final step before filling around 65,000 bottles with the delicious 2020 vintage in the upcoming school holidays. Needless to say all hands will be on deck...

Harvest 2020 completed hours before lockdown!

Well, what a week!  Together with our amazing team we managed to complete harvest 2020 just hours before the start of the lockdown.  The quality is outstanding with high sugar levels and tremendous flavour intensity.

It's a relief to know all our pickers are now safely self-isolating at home and no longer need to come to work. And luckily our kids are at home, too!  Thomas and Isabelle are working long hours in the winery, helping to press grapes, plunging pinot noir ferments and cleaning buckets and bins.

We feel totally blessed and send our thougths and love to all the businesses who had to close their doors to keep Covid-19 at bay...

Rise of Pinot Gris - Michael Cooper featuring NZ's best Pinot Gris in the Listener

New Zealand Listener 28 Sept 2019, page 42This week respected wine writer Michael Cooper is dedicating his column in the New Zealand Listener to one of our favourite Alsatian varieties, the fabulous Pinot Gris:

"What is it about Pinot Gris that explains its near 20-fold increase in vineyard area in New Zealand since 2000?  How about the wine's down-right drinkability?  Full-bodied and dryish, with gentle acidity and smooth, ripe but not assertive flavours, Pinot Gris tends to slip down very easily, drawing you back for a second glass... and maybe a third."

Michael Cooper has selected his favourite New Zealand Pinot Gris and we are over the moon to see our 2019 vintage featured in his line-up:

Blackenbrook Nelson Pinot Gris 2019, 4 1/2 Stars
This powerful wine is still very youthful. It has strong peach, pear, lychee and spice flavours with a distinct touch of complexity, slight sweetness balanced by fresh acidity and a scented bouquet.

And it's only a few months until you can taste the first of the 2018 wines - Sauvignon Blanc and Rose will be released on 1 August - watch this space...

A new vineyard in the making - exciting extension at Blackenbrook Vineyard

Young Sauvignon Blanc vines at our Nelson family vineyardFor the first time since 2007 we are planting a new vineyard block!  With growing demand from our main export markets Japan and Germany, we have decided to increase our production of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc - exciting times!

Luckily we still have lots of bare land - and the sheep just might have to move over a bit.

The posts were put in iduring winter.  This week we've planted the vines with a small team, and wires, vineyard-stakes, grow-guards and irrigation will follow next week.  It's school holiday, so we'll have the kids helping us, fantastic!

Hopefully the vines will establish quickly and might produce their first small crop next season, for vintage 2017!  Stay tuned for updates of our newest vineyard!
