Silver - New Zealand Wine of the Year Awards

5 Stars and 93/100 Wine Orbit
Youthfully charming and elegantly expressed, the inviting bouquet shows fresh pear, rockmelon, apple and blossom aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is soothing and expansive. The wine offers terrific fruit weight and persistency, making it immediately appealing.

This powerful wine is still very youthful. It has strong peach, pear, lychee and spice flavours with a distinct touch of complexity, slight sweetness balanced by fresh acidity and a scented bouquet.

Cameron Douglas MS, Mindfood Magazine July 2020
This Pinot Gris over-delivers on power and intensity with flavours of white-fleshed tropical fruit, pear and white nectarine with whispers of ginger spice and loads of texture.

Emma Jenkins MW and Jane Skilton MW, the Independent Wine Monthly, April 2020
The 2019 Pinot Gris has a soft baked apple, rich ripe pear and softly spiced gingerbread, this is fruity but not overt on the nose. The palate is fruitier, medium-bodied and off-dry with a fairly delicate texture and touch of phenolics. Lacks a little acidity and freshness on the finish.

Weather Conditions

Good rainfall in spring promoted healthy canopy growth. December brought fine and dry weather, ideal conditions for a successful flowering and pollination.

From January right into harvest a heat wave and drought gripped the region. Our deep-rooting vines and the moisture-holding clay soils enabled our un-irrigated vineyard to thrive in these challenging conditions and produce a healthy crop with outstanding flavour concentration.

Harvest kicked off on 8 March, the earliest starting date at Blackenbrook’s ever.
