Less is certainly more for the Blackenbrook family vineyard and winery.
Our wine-making philosophy is to simplify and soften the processes so that the natural flavours of the grapes are interfered with as little as possible. That means fining, filtration, pumping and additives are kept to the bare minimum.
Consistency is not paramount. Each year produces grapes and wines with a slightly different character and that’s fine by us. To quote Daniel:
“What we try to do is get it 100% right in the vineyard and get balanced fruit which equates to balanced juice and straight-forward winemaking. In our gravity-fed winery we disturb the wines as little as possible and I rely on my palate more than lab analysis to get it right.”
The terroir at Blackenbrook Vineyard is a unique combination of sea breezes across Moutere clay and hot dry summers with frosty winters which gives a distinctive background taste to each wine.
We produce wines under three labels.
Under the Blackenbrook label we release honest wines of great fruit purity, reflecting the terroir and our uncompromising drive for perfection.
Wines for the Reserve label are crafted only in exceptional years. They are a powerful expression of the land and our vision. Sealed under the revolutionary and guaranteed taint-free DIAM cork, these wines will age gracefully for many years to come.
Celebrate summer any time of year with our St Jacques wines. They take you back to beaches, sunshine and fresh food. Named after Coquille St Jacques – French for the beautiful scallop shell that Nelson is so famous for.
