Welcome to our Nelson Family Vineyard

Welcome to our Nelson Family Vineyard

On a gentle north-facing slope near Tasman Village, you’ll find Blackenbrook Vineyard, a small volume, high quality winery on a 20ha block owned by the Schwarzenbach Family. Blackenbrook Vineyard produces seven grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and the Italian red variety Montepulciano.  Blackenbrook is accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

It is a winery designed by a working winemaker. In this region, vines grow into Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate sweeps over the hillsides. The vineyard was first planted in the spring of 2001 and the first vintage was launched in 2004. Healthy soil, strong vines and sustainability are the focus of the vineyard management. Daniel, also the winemaker, strives for minimal interference with natural processes, which has resulted in pure and genuine wines. Most of Blackenbrook’s white varieties are completely unfined and vegan.

Autumn bliss at the vineyard

There is a peaceful silence over the vineyard. The cheerful pickers are long gone and content sheep now graze between the vines, keeping the grass short in a sustainable way.  The last of the yellow leaves are stubbornly hanging on, dreading the next storm that will clear them out. This scene is about to change next week when our team comes back from their well deserved break.  They will start cutting out this season's growth, marking the first and hugely important step towards vintage 2023...

A near-perfect harvest

We had a beautiful harvest despite Daniel and our two children contracting Covid on the first day of picking.  The weather was stunning and amidst the wide-spread labour shortage we were lucky to have a fantastic team of hand-pickers.  Quality and quantity were really good.  The fermenting wines already show great potential and we can't wait to see how they develop.

Many hands make light work

This harvest we were blessed with a brilliant picking crew - all local and many of them had been with us for years. When the weather was about to turn, the entire team gave up their weekend to help us beat the rain. And they brought along their friends, too! With the dark cloud of Covid having everybody scrambling for pickers, we were extremely grateful for this amazing support.
