Winery’s happy dilemma
Winning gold medals in not usually a problem for wineries, but it is posing a dilemma for Tasman winery Blackenbrook after its 2007 sauvignon blanc won a second major award.
The wine had already been named champion sauvignon blanc at the prestigious Bragato awards in Auckland in August. The accolades continued late last month when it won a gold medal and was named best sauvignon blanc at the New Zealand International Wine Show in Auckland.
But that’s created a problem for Blackenbrook’s Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach. They have been inundated with orders from buyers for the double gold-medal-winning wine, and are now worried that they’ll run out.
“The demand really increased after the second trophy,” Mrs Schwarzenbach said last week.
“We’ve ad to put the brakes on – we don’t want to sell out.”
Blackenbrook made 1000 cases of the 2007 sauvignon blanc and has about 600 left.

Mrs. Schwarzenbach said the winery wanted to ensure that it would be available to Nelson wine drinkers before it sold out.
She said her husband Daniel, who is Blackenbrook’s winemaker, knew that the 2007 sauvignon blanc was exceptional, but they still didn’t expect it to win two awards.
“Daniel said it was the best sauvignon blanc our land could produce and if it didn’t win an award, he’d be surprised. But we didn’t think it would win two like this.”
